Rangers have secured the signing of Emmanuel Olusegun Fernandez, a highly rated 23-year-old centre-back, on a four-year contract from Peterborough United, Footynaija.com reports.
The Scottish Premiership side confirmed the arrival of the powerful defender after fending off interest from Rennes and Schalke 04. Fernandez, who holds eligibility for both England and Nigeria, is currently working on securing a Nigerian passport as he aims to represent the Super Eagles at international level.
Fernandez, who began his career with Brentford before spells at Gillingham and Ramsgate, moved to Peterborough in 2021 and steadily grew into one of their standout performers. Last season, he registered five goals in 42 appearances and helped the club lift the EFL Trophy at Wembley in a memorable final against Birmingham City.
His goal threat from defence and physical dominance caught the attention of Rangers, who see him as a key addition under head coach Russell Martin.
“I’m honoured to join such a historic club,” Fernandez said. “Rangers have an amazing fanbase, and I feel this is the right place to push myself to new heights. I’ve not played at this level before, but I’m ready for the challenge.”
Rangers boss Martin said: “Emmanuel brings size, presence, and hunger to the team. We believe we can help him unlock even more potential in this environment.”
Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell added: “His rise from non-league to League One has been remarkable. We’ve tracked his development closely and are confident he can grow into a top-class defender at Ibrox.”
Fernandez will now look to make an immediate impact in Glasgow as he takes the next major step in his footballing career and continues to dream of donning the green and white of Nigeria.
