Hamburger SV have agreed a deal to sign Nigerian international Jordan Torunarigha on a free transfer, pending a medical later this week, Footynaija.com reports.
The 27-year-old centre-back is set to return to the Bundesliga following the expiry of his contract with Belgian outfit KAA Gent.
Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg confirmed the deal, with Torunarigha understood to have reached a full agreement with HSV, who are preparing for their top-flight return.
Torunarigha, who previously represented Germany at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2023, had attracted interest from a host of European clubs including Anderlecht, Marseille, and FC Köln. However, HSV’s newly appointed sporting director Stefan Kuntz and head coach Steffen Baumgart played a decisive role in luring the defender back to Germany.
A former Hertha Berlin player, Torunarigha brings considerable experience to Hamburg, having made 73 Bundesliga appearances and 145 outings for Gent, scoring four goals.
Known for his strong positional sense, pace, and ability to play out from the back, he is seen as a key addition to HSV’s defensive ranks.
Kuntz, who previously coached Torunarigha with Germany’s U21s and Olympic side, reportedly used that existing relationship to help finalise the move.
Torunarigha has been capped once by Nigeria but was left out of coach Eric Chelle’s recent squad for the Unity Cup in the United States, which saw the Super Eagles lift the trophy after wins over Ghana and Jamaica. He was also absent in Nigeria’s 1-1 friendly draw against Russia in Moscow last week.
