Liverpool have opened discussions with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as they look to beat Manchester United in the race to land the highly sought-after forward this summer, Footynaija.com reports.

Osimhen, 26, is expected to leave Napoli in the coming weeks despite returning from a successful loan spell at Galatasaray, where he scored a staggering 37 goals and contributed eight assists in just 41 appearances.

The Nigerian international has made it clear he prefers a move to the Premier League, snubbing a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, who were prepared to trigger his £63 million release clause.

While Napoli remain open to negotiations, sources suggest they would consider bids north of £50 million.

Liverpool, under the guidance of Arne Slot, are in the market for a prolific striker to lead the line next season. With Newcastle’s Alexander Isak deemed unattainable, Osimhen has emerged as a top alternative. The Reds have held early talks with the player’s representatives, according to TBR.

Manchester United are also firmly in the race, having already signed Matheus Cunha and edging closer to securing Bryan Mbeumo. Yet, manager Ruben Amorim remains intent on securing Osimhen to spearhead a refreshed frontline.

Signed by Napoli in 2020 after an impressive stint at Lille, Osimhen initially thrived in Italy, helping the club to a historic Serie A title. However, his relationship with the club soured last year, paving the way for an eventual exit.

With both English giants circling, Osimhen’s next move could define the summer window.
