The Jollof Derby returns – Analysts reveal what Super Eagles stand to lose if they fall again to Ghana in London

As Nigeria get set to face Ghana in the semi-final of the 2025 Unity Cup at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, football journalists and cultural analysts Nnamdi Onyeagwara and Carl Anka have explained why this match carries deeper meaning for fans beyond the pitch, Footynaija.com reports.

The Unity Cup has returned for the first time in 21 years, bringing together four nations with strong cultural footprints in the UK, including Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. But it is the West African rivalry between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars that has once again captured attention.

Speaking to The New York Times, the duo outlined what is truly at stake for the Super Eagles, and why another defeat to Ghana could have lasting cultural effects, especially among diaspora communities in the United Kingdom.

As Onyeagwara put it, “fans call it the ‘jollof derby’”, highlighting that this is about more than football: “It’s a rivalry where both nations constantly bicker as to who is better: at everything. Food. Football. Music. Culture.”

The emotional weight of this fixture has only grown since March 2022, when Ghana knocked Nigeria out of the World Cup qualifiers on away goals in Abuja, a night that ended in chaos as angry fans stormed the pitch.

Since then, Nigeria have had mixed fortunes. More recently, after a 2–0 win against Rwanda in March, where Victor Osimhen scored both goals, the Super Eagles were held to a 1–1 draw by Zimbabwe in Uyo, raising questions about consistency ahead of this high-stakes clash.

Carl Anka, also speaking to The New York Times, talked about the cultural tension surrounding this fixture: “Do not be fooled by the description — this is not a ‘friendly’ tournament… What is at stake here is much more significant: bragging rights.” Anka, who has covered football and identity for years, believes the match will be judged by its emotional outcome more than the final score.

A defeat for Nigeria would hand Ghana a powerful edge in a rivalry that stretches back decades. After the World Cup knockout in 2022, the 4–1 thrashing in Brentford in 2007, and now another defeat in London, Nigeria wouldn’t want to lose again. For the large Nigerian community in the UK, where football conversations often cross into cultural pride, that would sting.

Onyeagwara explained that this match is “about much more than just football,” stressing how deep these debates run: “These are football rivalries with plenty of spice… Bragging rights will be huge.”

London, home to vibrant Afro-Caribbean communities, provides the perfect setting. The tournament celebrates shared heritage, but it also reignites old rivalries. As Anka noted, “The games being played this week are about much more than just football and victory will mean a lot to the eventual champions.”
