The Super Eagles have one final chance to rescue some pride from a turbulent international window when they face Russia in Tuesday’s friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Footynaija reports.
Eric Chelle’s side arrive in Russia after a damaging 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau in their latest 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Nigeria had opened the qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Madagascar, but the loss in Bissau exposed problems Chelle will want his experimental side to address.
Chelle deliberately named a separate squad for the Russia friendly, creating an opportunity for several emerging players to stake their claim.
When and where is Russia vs Nigeria?
The match will be played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday, October 6.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm Moscow time, 5pm Nigerian time. The stadium, which hosted matches during the 2018 World Cup, can accommodate more than 43,000 spectators.
What is at stake for Nigeria?
Although this is only a friendly, there is plenty riding on it for Chelle.
The coach has been forced to rebuild his squad after a series of withdrawals, injuries, club restrictions and travel complications. At one point, Chelle revealed that Nigeria had only 14 available players as preparations began.
That chaos has opened the door for players such as Ibraheem Mahfus Ajasa, Vince Osuji and John Otomewo, while established names including Stanley Nwabali, Moses Simon and Kelechi Iheanacho provide experience.
Chelle has challenged the newcomers to show they can compete against a strong Russian team.
Russia arrive in dangerous form
Russia enter the game with confidence after hammering Namibia 6-0 in their previous friendly.
Valery Karpin’s team have also won four consecutive matches, making them a formidable opponent despite their absence from competitive UEFA and FIFA football since 2022.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have received a boost, though, with Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin and Krasnodar striker Dmitry Vorobyov unavailable. Golovin scored twice against Iran before suffering an ankle injury.
Russia vs Nigeria: Head-to-head
Nigeria and Russia have met only once at senior level.
Their first encounter ended 1-1 in Moscow in June 2025. Russia took the lead through a Semi Ajayi own goal before Tolu Arokodare came off the bench to equalise.
The key battle
Nigeria’s biggest challenge will be matching Russia’s intensity without losing their attacking threat.
Chelle has specifically demanded greater aggression from his players, saying Russia are intense when they lose possession and that he wants Nigeria to respond in the same way.
