Lazio have turned to Nigerian winger Philip Otele as they look to add an attacking option before the summer transfer window closes, Footynaija reports.
The Serie A club have made an enquiry to FC Basel and are discussing a possible loan deal with an option to buy the 27-year-old, according to transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri. Talks are still at an early stage and no agreement has been completed.
The move would give Otele another chance to play in one of Europe’s major leagues after his loan spell with Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga. Hamburg took him on loan in February 2026, with an option to make the deal permanent, but he returned to Basel at the end of the season.
Otele joined Basel permanently in 2025 after an earlier loan from Al-Wahda. He helped the Swiss club win the league and cup before moving to Germany.
His career has taken an unusual route. After developing in England while studying at Teesside University, he began his professional career in Lithuania before spells in Romania and the United Arab Emirates. His 18-goal season in Romania helped him attract wider attention.
He is now a Nigeria international and has continued to feature for Basel this season. His contract runs until 2028.
Lazio’s interest also follows earlier Serie A links with Lecce. The club’s reported preference for a loan with a purchase option could help limit their immediate spending while giving them a chance to assess Otele before making a permanent commitment.
With the deadline approaching, negotiations with Basel will decide whether the move can be completed.
