Super Eagles new boy Isaac James has revealed his ambition to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations after receiving his maiden invitation to the senior national team, Footynaija.com reports.
The 22-year-old Alverca defender was handed his first Nigeria call-up by head coach Eric Chelle for the September international window, having impressed with his performances in Portugal.
James started Alverca’s opening seven Primeira Liga matches of the 26/27 season before joining up with the Super Eagles squad, contributing two assists during that run.
The defender admitted he was surprised by how quickly his form earned him an international opportunity, having only recently established himself at senior level.

“I was doing well in the season, you know, but I didn’t expect to get a call-up immediately because I know it’s my dream to be here,” James told Footy-Africa.
“So when the coach called me, I was so surprised because I didn’t expect it to be so soon. But I’m really happy to be here. For me, I actually cried. I can’t lie because I’ve been dreaming, you know, to play in the national team.”
James has already set his sights beyond simply earning his first cap, with the defender naming the major tournaments he hopes to feature in during his international career.
“One of my dreams is to play at the FIFA World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations and in the Champions League.”

The Alverca defender’s versatility has also strengthened his case for a place in Chelle’s plans, with James capable of operating at left-back, left midfield and left-sided centre-back.
He will however have to overcome competition from established Super Eagles defenders including Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey and Bruno Onyemaechi as he looks to turn his maiden invitation into a permanent place in the national team.
With Nigeria targeting qualification for the 2027 AFCON, James could yet see his biggest international dream become a reality if he manages to impress in the upcoming friendly game against Russia and earn Chelle’s trust.
