Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has thrown his support behind Nigeria’s U20 national team with a ₦2 million cash donation as the Flying Eagles step up preparations for the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire, Footynaija.com reports.
The tournament, scheduled for July 26 to August 9, will determine the teams that qualify from the WAFU B zone for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations, making it a crucial competition for Nigeria’s young talents.
According to a report by Premium Times, Musa presented the donation through Flying Eagles team coordinator Abubakar Abubakar and urged the players to stay focused on the task ahead.
The former Nigeria captain, who also represented the Flying Eagles and won the 2011 Africa U20 Cup of Nations, reminded the squad that success at youth level can shape the rest of a player’s career.
He said making a mark with the Flying Eagles is often the first major step towards becoming a successful professional footballer and representing the Super Eagles at the highest level.
Musa knows that journey better than most. The 32 year old remains Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 international appearances. He helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also became the first Nigerian to score in two different FIFA World Cups, netting four goals across the 2014 and 2018 tournaments.
His latest gesture comes as the Flying Eagles continue fine-tuning their preparations under head coach Abdu Maikaba, with expectations high that Nigeria can secure one of the available qualification spots for the continental championship.
Beyond the financial support, Musa’s message is an encouragement for a squad hoping to follow in the footsteps of several Nigerian stars who first announced themselves on the international stage with the Flying Eagles.
The seven-time African champions have a proud history at U20 level and will be aiming to add another successful chapter when the WAFU B Championship begins later this month, with Musa hoping his contribution and words of encouragement will inspire the next generation to seize their opportunity.
