Portuguese giants FC Porto have decided against signing Nigerian striker Terem Moffi on a permanent deal following an underwhelming loan spell from OGC Nice, Footynaija reports.

The Super Eagles forward joined Porto in January in search of a fresh start after a difficult period in France, but the move failed to revive his form. Porto held an €8 million option to buy the striker permanently, yet reports in Portugal say the club chose not to proceed after unsuccessful attempts to negotiate a cheaper deal with Nice.

Moffi scored only two goals and registered one assist in 15 appearances for the former European champions, with much of his football coming from the substitutes’ bench. Porto are now preparing for next season’s return to the UEFA Champions League and club president André Villas-Boas is reportedly focused on bringing in two new attacking options instead.

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola via OneFootball, Porto quickly shifted attention away from Moffi as part of a wider squad rebuild ahead of Francesco Farioli’s first full campaign in charge.

The failed move leaves the 26-year-old facing an uncertain future. His relationship with Nice supporters had already deteriorated before his temporary switch to Portugal, following reports of angry fans confronting players after a poor run of results late last year.

Nice co-president Maurice Cohen later stated: “They will not return to Nice, whether their buy options are triggered or not.”

Despite his recent struggles, Moffi still retains admirers across Europe because of his strong record in French football.

During spells with FC Lorient and Nice, he scored 54 Ligue 1 goals in 148 appearances and once challenged Kylian Mbappé and Neymar near the top of the scoring charts during the 2022-23 season.

West Ham United, Aston Villa and SS Lazio are among the clubs still monitoring his situation, while Olympique de Marseille and Fenerbahçe have also been linked with the Nigerian international ahead of the summer transfer window.
