Maduka Okoye can finally draw a line under one of the most difficult chapters of his career, Footynaija.com reports.
An Italian court has permanently dropped the criminal fraud investigation against the Super Eagles goalkeeper, bringing to a close a legal process that had been hanging over him since early in the season.
The case centred on a yellow card Okoye received during Udinese’s Serie A match against Lazio on March 11, 2024. The 64th-minute booking for time-wasting appeared routine, but investigators later discovered an unusual spike in betting activity specifically targeting that outcome.
A close associate of Okoye, who runs a pizzeria in Udine, had placed bets that generated over €120,000 in winnings.

The Italian Football Federation’s National Federal Court cleared Okoye of sporting fraud and match-fixing, accepting the arguments of his lawyers in full. However, a two-month ban was imposed for a lesser violation of the general principle of fairness, and he served that suspension at the start of the 2025-26 season, missing six Serie A fixtures and a Coppa Italia tie.
The criminal investigation was a separate matter entirely, pursued by the Udine court system rather than football’s governing bodies.
According to Messaggero Veneto, as reported by Premium Times, that process has now been formally terminated. Betting operator Snaitech withdrew its complaint, and Judge Paolo Lauteri accepted the withdrawal during a pre-trial hearing, ruling there was no longer any case to answer.
The timing of the ruling could not be more welcome for the 26-year-old. Okoye returned from his suspension in October and has barely put a foot wrong since. He has kept 10 clean sheets in 28 Serie A appearances this season.
