Atletico Madrid have raised concerns over the way Ademola Lookman was used during Nigeria’s recent international fixtures in March, Footynaija reports.
The Spanish club is understood to be unhappy about the forward’s heavy workload on national team duty.
Lookman featured for the full 90 minutes in both of the Nigeria’s friendlies against Iran and Jordan, clocking up 180 minutes across the two matches. While he played a key role in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over Iran and their 2-2 draw with Jordan, his involvement has reportedly not gone down well with his club.
According to reports in Spain, Atletico believe the decision to keep Lookman on the pitch for the entirety of both games was unnecessary, particularly as the fixtures were friendlies rather than competitive matches. The club are said to have expected a more cautious approach from the Nigeria Football Federation, especially given the demanding schedule at club level.

Lookman has been in strong form since his move from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, quickly establishing himself as an important attacking option in Madrid. Across domestic and European competitions, he has contributed five goals and four assists in 14 appearances, underlining his growing influence within the squad.
With the season entering a decisive stage, Atletico are understood to be prioritising player fitness as they compete on multiple fronts, including La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. There is concern that the physical demands placed on Lookman during international duty could increase the risk of fatigue or injury at a critical point in the campaign.
Atletico Madrid face Barcelona on Saturday, April 4 before meeting the Catalans again in the Champions League in midweek.
