Nigeria have been dealt a late setback ahead of their friendly against Jordan, with goalkeeper Maduka Okoye ruled out after suffering a thigh injury in training, Footynaija reports.
Okoye, who plays his club football for Udinese, had been expected to start after recently returning to the Super Eagles squad. The 25-year-old featured in the win over Iran just days earlier and was seen as a strong candidate to reclaim the number one spot. However, the injury picked up in Antalya has now forced him out of contention for Tuesday’s game.
His absence leaves head coach Eric Chelle with limited options. First-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is not part of the squad for this international window, meaning Nigeria will head into the match without their two leading choices.
The situation has quickly shifted attention to Francis Uzoho, who is now the most experienced goalkeeper available in camp. Uzoho has earned over 30 caps for Nigeria and has featured at major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Despite facing criticism in recent years for inconsistent performances, he remains a familiar presence within the squad.
Another option for Chelle is Adebayo Adeleye, although the Volos FC goalkeeper has limited international experience. With Nigeria aiming to finish strongly in the four-nation invitational tournament, the coaching staff must decide whether to rely on experience or offer an opportunity to a less-tested player.
Okoye’s injury is a significant blow at a crucial moment. The friendly against Jordan represents Nigeria’s final match of the competition, and a victory could secure top spot.
