Former Nigerian goalkeeper Alloy Agu has backed the Super Eagles to impress at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations when the tournament kicks off in Morocco later this month, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles are not heading into this year’s tournament under the most ideal circumstances, having recently suffered a crushing heartbreak in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Eric Chelle‘s men also look set to enter the competition without a number of key players with the recent retirement of skipper William Troost-Ekong and the potential absence of Stanley Nwabali and Ola Aina through injury.
However, Agu, who tasted glory in this tournament with Nigeria back in 1994, believes the Super Eagles are capable of mounting a deep run in this year’s edition despite the current situation of things.

“When it comes to football, you have to be optimistic; otherwise you shouldn’t even be involved,” Agu said in an interview with Footy-Africa.
“Going to the AFCON, the Super Eagles must remove all negativity and believe in themselves and in God. They have to go there and play for the badge and for the entire country.
“You can’t write off the Super Eagles. Remember 2013 — no one gave them a chance, yet they won the trophy. Sometimes the team performs better when no one believes in them because you can’t predict football.
“But the question is: are they willing to play to their potential and give everything they have?”

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off on December 21 but the Super Eagles will not be in action until December 23 when they open their campaign in Group C versus Tanzania.
