Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 group stage run ended in style with a 3–1 win over Uganda, a result that confirmed the Super Eagles’ authority in Group C, Footynaija.com reports.

Goals from Paul Onuachu and Raphael Onyedika, who struck twice, settled the contest, even though Uganda did manage a late reply. The Cranes also played most of the second half with ten men after their goalkeeper Jamal Salim was sent off for handball.

From the early pressure to the finish, this was another match that showed how Nigeria are growing into the tournament.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

5. Nigeria keep starting games on the front foot

For the third match running at AFCON 2025, Nigeria set the tone early. The Super Eagles pressed high, won corners and free kicks, and forced Uganda to defend deep.

That approach paid off in the 28th minute when Paul Onuachu scored from close range after Fisayo Dele Bashiru’s low pass across the box. Nigeria have now scored first in all three group games, averaging over 2.5 goals in each, a sign of strong preparation and clear intent from kick off.

4. Samuel Chukwueze is driving Nigeria’s creativity

Chukwueze did not score, but his influence was obvious. He assisted both of Onyedika’s goals, picking the right passes at the right moments. He also won several free kicks and stretched Uganda’s back line throughout the match.

After earlier games where Alex Iwobi controlled play from central areas, this was another reminder that Nigeria have different creative outlets, depending on the opponent.

3. Midfield goals are becoming a real feature

Raphael Onyedika’s two goals stood out. Both came from good movement into the box and calm finishing, first in the 62nd minute and again five minutes later.

With midfielders now contributing goals at this AFCON, Nigeria look less dependent on their forwards alone. That balance has shown across the tournament, with different players stepping up in different matches.

2. The red card changed the game but Nigeria stayed professional

Uganda’s hopes took a serious hit in the 57th minute when goalkeeper Jamal Salim was sent off for handling the ball outside the box. Nigeria took advantage quickly, scoring twice soon after.

Even when Uganda pulled one back through Rogers Mato in the 75th minute, the Super Eagles did not panic. They managed the game well, made sensible substitutions, and saw out the win without drama.

1. Nigeria finish the group stage with real momentum

Three matches, three wins, and a strong goal return shows Nigeria’s growing confidence at AFCON 2025. Wins over Tanzania, Tunisia, and now Uganda have shown different sides of this team.

Early control, attacking variety, and the ability to respond to changes in a match. This performance against Uganda confirmed that the Super Eagles are learning and adjusting as the tournament progresses.
