Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has responded with composure after missing out on the final shortlist for the 2025 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award, despite widespread expectations that she would make the top three, Footynaija.com reports.

Okoronkwo was included in the 10-woman shortlist announced in October but did not progress to the final three revealed by CAF on Sunday. Nigeria captain Rasheedat Ajibade, along with Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy, were the players selected.

The decision surprised many supporters, given Okoronkwo’s outstanding year for club and country. The 28-year-old was instrumental in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th WAFCON title, providing crucial assists in the quarterfinal, semifinal and final against Zambia, South Africa and Morocco.

The former Tenerife star also excelled at AFC Toronto, helping the club secure the inaugural NSL Shield and striking a hat-trick in a 4–1 win over Montreal Roses to send her side into the Northern Super League final.

Reacting on Instagram, she wrote: “I remain grateful for the support across Africa. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch where recognition is earned not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality but the pitch never lies.”

Nigeria maintained strong representation across other categories, with Victor Osimhen shortlisted for the Men’s Player of the Year alongside Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi. Ajibade made the final three in the women’s category, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie earned her third straight nomination.

The CAF Awards will take place on 19 November in Rabat, Morocco.
