Nigeria’s Falconets have been crowned champions of the WAFU B U20 Girls Cup for the first time after a convincing 3-0 victory over Ghana’s Black Princesses at the Stade Omnisports d’Adjohoun on Tuesday morning, Footynaija.com reports.
Goals from Janet Akekoromowei, Alaba Olabiyi, and Ramotalahi Kareem sealed the win and confirmed Nigeria as champions of the round-robin tournament with a game to spare.
The Falconets entered the clash needing just a win to secure the title and they made their intentions clear early on.
Akekoromowei opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a powerful free-kick from distance that beat the Ghanaian goalkeeper. Six minutes later, Olabiyi bundled home from close range to double Nigeria’s advantage.
In the second half, around the hour mark, Kareem connected perfectly with Akekoromowei’s fine cross to make it 3-0. The goal was her third of the tournament, bringing her level with Akekoromowei at the top of the scorers’ chart.
The result took Nigeria to nine points from three matches, ahead of Ghana, who finished with six points from four games.
It was sweet revenge for the Falconets, who lost the final of the inaugural edition two years ago. Coach Moses Aduku’s side will now turn their focus to next year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Senegal.
