England-born winger Jacob Murphy has reportedly turned down an invitation from Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle to switch international allegiance and represent the Super Eagles, Footynaija.com reports.

The Newcastle United forward, who has yet to feature for England at any level, is said to have told Chelle he would prefer to wait for a potential opportunity with the Three Lions before making any final decision.

Chelle, who is currently finalising his squad for Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs, was keen to add Murphy to his attacking options ahead of a decisive series of games.

However, a top official from the Nigeria Football Federation confirmed to OGN via LegitNews that the player, while acknowledging his Nigerian heritage, remains focused on his club career and his hopes of earning a future England call-up.

Despite declining the approach, sources close to the player suggest Murphy could revisit the idea of representing Nigeria if the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. At 30, the Newcastle winger remains ambitious about appearing on the global stage, and a World Cup appearance could yet appeal to him if England’s interest fails to materialise.

Murphy has been a consistent performer under Eddie Howe, contributing two goals and an assist so far this season despite Newcastle’s mixed run of form. His pace and versatility on the wings make him an attractive option for Chelle, who has been actively scouting dual-eligible players across Europe in an effort to strengthen Nigeria’s attacking depth.

However, with the CAF World Cup playoffs set to begin later this month in Morocco, where Nigeria will face Gabon, Chelle is expected to move forward without Murphy. The Super Eagles must win two games to advance to the Intercontinental Playoff in March.
