A senior member of the Super Eagles squad has shared his thoughts on the debate about who should be Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper between Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, following the growing calls for a change ahead of the World Cup playoffs, Footynaija.com reports.
The discussion has heated up in recent weeks as Nwabali’s form appears to have dipped after the World Cup qualifiers, where his theatrics and erratic moments drew criticism from fans and pundits. Meanwhile, Okoye’s return at Udinese has made many wonder if he deserves another shot at the number one spot.
Nwabali, who became a national hero during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with his penalty-saving display against South Africa, has come under scrutiny for his recent performances. His decision-making and confidence in the air have been questioned, particularly in games where the Super Eagles’ defence looked shaky.

However, according to a report by Legit.ng, a senior Super Eagles player said the coaching staff and defenders remain fully behind Nwabali.
“Maduka plays at a higher level than Nwabali, but that does not always translate to the national team,” the player was quoted as saying.
He added, “For now, Nwabali has confidence working for him and the trust of the coaches and defence in front of him. But it is good that Okoye is back because of what he adds either as backup or when he is required to step in.”

Okoye’s return to the Super Eagles setup has been welcomed by many. The Udinese goalkeeper was briefly sidelined from club action following an internal investigation linked to a betting-related suspension that made headlines in Italy.
His comeback, however, has been nothing short of impressive. Upon returning to the starting line-up, the 26-year-old delivered a standout performance in the 1-1 draw against US Cremonese in Serie A. He made a string of fine saves that helped Udinese avoid defeat and showed the calmness and authority that once made him Nigeria’s number one.
Still, as some have pointed out, playing at a higher level does not always guarantee international success. Nwabali’s composure during the AFCON showed that confidence and understanding with the defenders often matter more than club reputation.
