“I’m very motivated” – Did Gabon’s Aubameyang send World Cup playoffs warning to Super Eagles?

Gabon’s skipper and talisman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has declared his strong motivation to lead his nation to the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of their playoff semi-final clash with the Super Eagles in Morocco, Footynaija.com reports.

Like Nigeria, Gabon failed to clinch an automatic World Cup ticket from their CAF qualification group but did well enough to finish the campaign as one of the best second-placed teams and a playoff spot.

Unlike Nigeria though, the Panthers actually enjoyed a much more impressive qualifying campaign, recording eight wins, one draw and one defeat. In fact, they boast the highest points tally of all second-placed teams.

With the playoff tie against the Super Eagles just a month away, Aubameyang has made no secret of Gabon’s desire to be one of Africa’s representatives in the United States, Mexico and Canada next summer.

“We want to go to the World Cup and, to get there, we have to win games,” the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker told The Standard. “I’m very motivated, and when you have the chance to go to the World Cup, you have to be even more motivated.”

While Aubameyang’s statement is not a direct warning to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, it is still a message of intent, suggesting that Gabon have no plans to let themselves be pushed over in Morocco come November 13.

However, the Super Eagles have found their stride again after that stuttering start to the World Cup qualification campaign and will no doubt present a formidable opposition for the Panthers when both teams square off in Northern Africa.
