Former Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has opened the door to a new chapter in his football journey after confirming his exit from Marumo Gallants, Footynaija.com reports.
The 39-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, who made just seven league appearances last season, says he is ready to move into coaching while keeping the option of playing open.
“I have my CAF D Coaching Licence in hand, and very soon I will upgrade as I am ready to take on the next challenge and transition into coaching,” Akpeyi told FARPost.
“You know, the club [Gallants] had other plans, but as an individual, I have to continue and hope for the best. Right now, there are two options: either to play or to coach, but I am looking at the transition. And I am also ready to accept a club that can allow both coaching and playing at the same time.”
Akpeyi spent more than a decade in South Africa, turning out for Chippa United, Moroka Swallows, Kaizer Chiefs, and Gallants.
During that period, he represented Nigeria’s Super Eagles 19 times, including appearances at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where he helped Nigeria reach the semi-finals.
While there has been interest from clubs in South Africa’s Motsepe Foundation Championship, no firm offers have been made.
With his coaching badges in hand and vast experience between the posts, Akpeyi’s next move could see him straddle both roles: mentor and player.
