Liverpool’s teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha has signed his first professional contract with the club, a year after leaving Chelsea’s academy, Footynaija.com reports.
The forward, who turned 17 in August, has already introduced himself to Liverpool supporters in unforgettable fashion.
On his Premier League debut against Newcastle last month, Ngumoha struck a stoppage-time winner at St James’ Park – becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to score a decisive goal in the competition.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, the highly-rated winger is eligible to represent both nations at senior level and has already been capped by England at U19 level. His rise has been rapid under Arne Slot, who handed him minutes across four different competitions in 2025 – the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
The teenager’s Champions League debut came earlier this month when he featured in Liverpool’s win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield, making him the youngest Red to appear in Europe since Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Having first arrived at Kirkby from Chelsea in September 2024, Ngumoha spent much of last season across the U18s, U19s and U21s, making 25 youth appearances and registering six goal contributions. He was rewarded with his senior bow in January’s FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley before establishing himself as a genuine first-team option.
Liverpool have not disclosed the length of his new contract, though Premier League rules prevent players under 18 from signing deals longer than three years. The agreement locks down one of the country’s most exciting young attackers amid growing interest from across Europe.
Slot has praised the teenager’s fearlessness and work rate, while insiders at Liverpool believe his blend of pace, dribbling and finishing could see him develop into a regular starter within the next two seasons.
For Nigeria, the development will not go unnoticed. With Victor Osimhen leading the Super Eagles’ line, the potential of adding Ngumoha in the future will be an enticing prospect for the Nigerian Football Federation, should the youngster opt for his parents’ homeland.
