Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman made his first start of the season on Tuesday night as Atalanta fought from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Club Brugge in matchday two of the UEFA Champions League league phase, Footynaija.com reports.
Lookman earned a place in Ivan Juric’s starting XI, lining up alongside Nikola Krstovic in attack. But having been on the periphery of the squad for much of the early season following his transfer saga, the Nigerian looked short of rhythm.
He registered 34 touches and created one chance but failed to test the goalkeeper with either of his two attempts on goal.

The 27-year-old also struggled to make his usual impact in wide areas, completing just one of his six crosses and winning only two of eight ground duels.
His passing, however, remained tidy, with all but one of his 15 passes finding their intended target. Ultimately, his rustiness showed and Juric opted to replace him with Kamaldeen Sulemana in the 61st minute.
Meanwhile, Lookman’s compatriot Raphael Onyedika played no part in the clash.
Onyedika recently suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for the next few weeks and Club Brugge felt his absence as they failed to maintain their early lead.
Christos Tzolis fired the visitors in front seven minutes before half-time, but Atalanta rallied, with Lazar Samardzic levelling from the spot in the 73rd minute before Mario Pasalic sealed the win late on.
While Atalanta celebrated victory, the night offered mixed fortunes for Nigeria’s stars with Lookman gaining valuable minutes despite his struggles and Onyedika facing a frustrating spell on the sidelines.
Lookman’s lack of sharpness will be a concern for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle ahead of October’s World Cup qualifiers, though consistent game time could quickly bring the winger back to his best.
