Following the Super Falcons’ dominant opening victory against Tunisia at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scorer of Nigeria’s second goal Omorinsola Babajide opened up on her reason for dedicating her goal to deceased Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, Footynaija.com reports.
Babajide was making her first appearance at the WAFCON and the UDG Tenerife winger left no stone unturned in terms of stamping her mark in the game as Nigeria cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Tunisia in Casablanca.
The 27-year-old assisted Asisat Oshoala’s opening goal and then went on to bag one for herself just before the half time whistle. After scoring, the former Liverpool forward paid tribute to Jota by doing his trademark goal celebration.

Speaking to Ademola Victor after the game, Babajide explained that her celebration was her way of honouring the memory of the Portuguese star, who, alongside his younger brother, tragically lost his life in a traffic accident last week.
“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. So that was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club. We call it the signatory celebration,” Babajide said.
“So I just wanted to do something for him. He was one of my best players at the club when I was there as well, and may the souls of both of them rest in peace.”
Babajide’s goal against Tunisia was her first for the Super Falcons. While she was excited to finally get on the score sheet, the UDG Tenerife forward chose to lay emphasis on Nigeria’s ultimate ambitions.
“It’s a bit of relief more than anything,” she said. “I’ve had a few appearances, a few assists, but I was always missing that first goal, so I’m just happy to get that out of the way.
“Also, to be able to contribute to a win in such a huge tournament is a privilege. Now, we want to win the trophy, have a better performance in each game, and then score as many goals as possible.”
The Super Falcons will take to the pitch again on July 10 to face Botswana in their second group stage match.
