Norway’s Eliteserien has long been a surprising destination for Nigerian talents, with several forwards and wingers using the Scandinavian league as a stepping stone in Europe.

In this article, Footynaija.com takes you through the top five Nigerian transfers by fee in the Eliteserien.

5. Igoh Ogbu — €300k

Igoh Ogbu joined Lillestrøm SK in 2020/21 for a reported €300,000. The centre-back was only 20 at the time but had already shown his defensive ability in Norway with Sogndal and Rosenborg. His strength and aerial presence made him a solid addition at the back, and he went on to establish himself as a regular starter for the Canaries.

4. Adeleke Akinyemi – €700k

In the 2018/19 season, 20-year-old Adeleke Akinyemi signed for IK Start from Ventspils in Latvia for €700,000. He arrived in Norway after scoring goals freely in the Latvian league and was seen as a long-term attacking option. While he struggled to replicate his form in Eliteserien, the fee remains one of the highest paid for a Nigerian in the country.

3. Peter Ijeh – €900k

A veteran striker at the time, Peter Ijeh moved to Viking FK in 2006/07 for €900,000 after a good spell with IFK Göteborg in Sweden. At 29, the centre-forward had already built a reputation as a reliable goalscorer in Scandinavia. He quickly adapted to life in Norway, delivering goals that justified his transfer fee.

2. John Chibuike – €1.00m

Rosenborg BK made headlines in the 2011/12 season when they paid €1 million for second striker John Chibuike. Then 22, he was signed from Swedish side Helsingborgs IF and brought versatility and creativity to Rosenborg’s attacking midfield.

1. Samuel Adegbenro – €1.60m

The most expensive Nigerian transfer in Norwegian football history came in 2017/18, when Rosenborg BK shelled out €1.6 million for Samuel Adegbenro. Just 21 years old at the time, the left winger was brought in from Viking FK after making waves in the league with his explosive pace and dribbling. Adegbenro delivered instantly, scoring important goals and helping Rosenborg to league and cup success.
