Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle had plenty to say after Nigeria battled to a 1–1 draw with Russia in a friendly match held at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on June 6, 2025, Footynaija.com reports.
The game tested Nigeria’s shape and focus under pressure, and Chelle did not hold back in his post-match comments.
Speaking after the match, Chelle praised the Russian team, calling them a tough opponent and going as far as comparing them to Germany.

According to him, Russia play with high intelligence, make quick transitions, and press with serious intensity — traits often seen in elite European teams.
“I think there are few teams in Europe that play like Russia. I would compare your team to Germany – you play a very smart style,” Chelle said, as reported by the Russian Football Union.
The Super Eagles boss added that playing in Moscow without proper preparation could lead to serious problems, underlining how hard it was for his team to hold possession in the second half.
“Russia covers a lot of ground. If you come to Moscow without preparing properly, you can face serious difficulties” he said.
He acknowledged that Russia’s pressing game exposed a weakness Nigeria must fix quickly, especially with 2026 World Cup qualifiers around the corner.
Chelle also credited the atmosphere at Luzhniki, calling it friendly and exciting. He admitted that both teams had chances but believed that a draw was the fair result.
When asked who impressed him the most from the Russian team, he said: “Number 9 (Nikolay Komlichenko) stood out for me. The team is well organised and transitions fast. This is why I think a 1–1 result in Moscow is something we can be proud of.”
The match gave Chelle another look at how his team responds under top-level pressure. He confirmed there would be tactical adjustments, especially on how Nigeria deals with pressing sides.
Chelle also touched on the challenges African teams face in securing matches against top European opponents. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, pointing out how rare these games are and how much his squad can gain from them.
