Iwobi and Bassey set to halt Man City’s Champions League push

With six Champions League spots available to English clubs next season, the race for the remaining places is heating up, Footynaija.com reports.

As the curtain falls on the 2024–25 campaign, Fulham’s home fixture against Manchester City suddenly carries major consequences, and Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey are right at the centre of the story.

Unlike previous seasons where only four clubs from England could qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League has earned two additional spots this year due to impressive performances by English clubs across Europe.

This change is based on UEFA’s coefficient rankings, and England finished among the top two leagues alongside Spain. As a result, the Premier League will send six teams into the competition for the 2025–26 season.

Three of those spots are already sealed. Liverpool, with 83 points, have been crowned champions. Arsenal, currently on 71 points, are safe in second.

The third team to confirm their place is Tottenham Hotspur, who clinched Champions League qualification by lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy on Wednesday night with a 1–0 win over Manchester United in Bilnao. Spurs’ triumph earned them automatic entry into next season’s group stage.

That leaves just three Champions League spots open, and heading into the final matchday, Manchester City (3rd, 68 points), Newcastle United (4th, 66 points), and Chelsea (5th, 66 points) currently occupy those places. Aston Villa (6th, 66 points) and Nottingham Forest (7th, 65 points) remain in the chase, but their chances hinge on results elsewhere.

Manchester City, in particular, are in a sensitive position. If they lose at Craven Cottage and all of Newcastle, Villa and Chelsea win, they would slide from third to sixth. Forest could even match their points tally with a win over Chelsea, though City’s superior goal difference should keep them ahead of Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey’s Fulham may not be in the European conversation, but the team could have a huge say in who gets there.

Iwobi has been a steady presence in midfield under Marco Silva this season, making 37 league appearances, scoring nine times and providing six assists. His ability to transition play and exploit space could prove essential against City’s defence.

Bassey, meanwhile, has established himself as Fulham’s defensive anchor. With over 30 league outings this season, the Super Eagles defender has shown improved composure and timing, and will likely be tasked with keeping Erling Haaland or Omar Marmoush quiet.

A victory would not just earn the London outlet a top-half finish, it could dramatically alter the top of the table.

If Fulham can maintain a good defensive discipline, with Iwobi and Bassey stepping up, Fulham might just derail City’s Champions League plans.
