Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a confident 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Ghana in the semi-final of the 2025 Unity Cup at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium on May 28, Footynaija.com reports.

Goals from Cyriel Dessers and Semi Ajayi’s efforts gave Eric Chelle’s team a first-half lead, with Ghana pulling one back through Brandon Thomas-Asante in the second half.

The result sends Nigeria into Saturday’s final against Jamaica, and here are five key things we learned from the match.

1. Cyriel Dessers Took His Chance Well

With Victor Osimhen rested, Cyriel Dessers stepped up and proved why he remains a strong attacking option. The Rangers striker opened the scoring in the 14th minute, making a well-timed run to meet Sodiq Ismail’s low cross.

It was a proper poacher’s finish and a reminder of Dessers’ sharpness in front of goal. For a player who has often been on the fringes of the national team, this performance strengthens his case for more regular inclusion.

2. Semi Ajayi Remains Reliable at Both Ends

Ajayi did more than just defend. The West Brom centre-back rose highest in the 19th minute to contribute the own goal in favour of Nigeria after a cross from Samuel Chukwueze took a slight deflection.

Beyond the goal, he kept Ghana’s attack quiet for most of the night. His aerial presence and reading of the game were standout features. At 31, he continues to be one of Nigeria’s most dependable defenders.

3. Eric Chelle Is Not Afraid to Rotate

Eric Chelle made several changes to the team that faced Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March. He gave opportunities to players like Sodiq Ismail, who impressed with a sharp assist, and Frank Onyeka, who controlled midfield in the first half.

The Unity Cup might be a friendly tournament, but Chelle clearly used it to assess depth in the squad. His willingness to rotate shows growing confidence in his system.

4. Nigeria Still Needs to Manage Games Better

Despite a strong first half, the Super Eagles let Ghana back into the game after the break. Thomas-Asante’s goal in the 70th minute was a result of lapses in concentration.

Nigeria’s midfield appeared to drop too deep, and the backline failed to deal with a loose ball. Though the team held on to win, Chelle will want more control in the closing stages, especially against stronger opposition in future tournaments.

5. The Rivalry Is Still Intense, Even in Friendlies

The match had the energy of a competitive qualifier. Nigerian and Ghanaian fans filled the Gtech Stadium, creating a lively atmosphere. Every tackle, miss, and goal was met with huge reactions.

While the Unity Cup is technically a friendly, this fixture never lacks fire. It brings to reminder the fact that the West African rivalry remains one of the most passionate in world football, regardless of stakes.
