Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has called up a strong defensive unit for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Footynaija.com reports.

They are a mix of experienced internationals and rising stars, but who stands out as the best defender?

Using recent market values and overall impact, we rank the invited defenders based on their current form, club influence, and individual ability.

1. William Troost-Ekong

Leading the pack is Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong. As one of the most experienced defenders in the squad, Ekong has been a mainstay in the Nigerian national team.

While his exact market value isn’t as high as some of his teammates, his leadership, organisational skills, and years of international football experience make him a key part of the Super Eagles’ defensive setup.

Currently playing for Saudi Arabia’s Al Kholood, Troost-Ekong brings experience and defensive awareness that younger players still lack. The AFCON 2023 Most Valuable Player award winner will be key to Eric Chelle’s setup both on and off the pitch.

2. Calvin Bassey

Following closely is Calvin Bassey, Nigeria’s most valuable defender at €16 million.

The Fulham centre-back has grown into a reliable presence in the Premier League, bringing strength and composure to his game. He has been a regular starter for Fulham, even scoring a crucial goal in their recent FA Cup win over Manchester United.

His versatility, ability to play as both a left-back and centre-back, and experience in top European competitions make him the standout defender in Chelle’s squad.

3. Ola Aina

Another defender thriving in the Premier League is Ola Aina, valued at €14 million. The Nottingham Forest full-back has been a key figure in their stellar performance in England’s top flight this season.

Aina’s ability to play across multiple positions in defence gives him an edge over many traditional full-backs.

He offers pace, agility, and defensive intelligence, making him a strong option for Nigeria in the qualifiers.

4. Bright Osayi-Samuel

A close fourth is Bright Osayi-Samuel, currently playing for Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Süper Lig.

Valued at €8 million, he is one of Africa’s top-rated full-backs. He played a key role in Fenerbahçe’s strong league run last season and earned a spot in the Süper Lig Team of the Season.

Osayi-Samuel’s attacking runs and defensive recoveries make him a modern-day full-back suited for both defensive and offensive transitions.

5. Igho Ogbu

Igho Ogbu has been solid for Slavia Prague, playing a key role in their defensive stability. The 25-year-old centre-back is currently valued at €8 million, and his performances in the Czech First League have caught attention.

His strength in one-on-one duels and aerial dominance could see him rise in future rankings.

6. Jordan Torunarigha

Belgium-based Jordan Torunarigha follows closely with a €4.5 million valuation. The KAA Gent centre-back has been a pillar in the Pro League, known for his aerial ability and calmness on the ball.

His experience in European club football gives him an edge, and he has gradually built his profile as one of Nigeria’s promising centre-backs.

7. Zaidu Sanusi

Valued at €3 million, Zaidu Sanusi has been a consistent performer for FC Porto. The left-back has experience in the Champions League and is a key part of Porto’s consistent impressive Primeira Liga campaign.

Sanusi’s attacking instincts and ability to contribute in the final third make him a solid choice at left-back, though he faces competition in the squad.

8. Gabriel Osho

The former Luton Town man recently switched to AJ Auxerre in Ligue 1, where he has continued to prove himself.

Valued at €3 million, Osho made his Nigerian debut in a tough match against Benin and could become a key part of Chelle’s plans. His positioning and tackling ability make him an asset, but he needs more experience at the international level.

9. Bruno Onyemaechi

Bruno Onyemaechi recently secured a move to Olympiacos, a club known for producing solid defensive talents. His experience in Portuguese football has toughened him up.

Although he has the same market value of €3 million as Osho, he comes in slightly lower on the list because the latter is in the French Ligue 1—a relatively tougher league.

10. Ifeanyi Onyebuchi

Ifeanyi Onyebuchi plays for Enugu Rangers, one of Nigeria’s top clubs. He was instrumental in their NPFL title-winning campaign, proving himself in domestic football.

However, playing in the NPFL rather than a top European league places him behind defenders with stronger international exposure.

Based on market value, impact on national scene, and recent performances, Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey stand out as Nigeria’s top defender.

Their reputation as reliable centre-backs is growing , makeing them the best options in Eric Chelle’s defensive lineup. Bright Osayi-Samuel and Ola Aina also offer strong competition with their attacking full-back roles.

With the World Cup qualifiers fast approaching, Nigeria will need these defenders at their best to secure a place on the biggest stage.
