Fulham football club and the Nigerian Football Federation have shown support for Super Eagles star Calvin Bassey after the defender was subjected to racial abuse following the Cottagers’ FA Cup triumph over Manchester United, Footynaija.com reports.

Bassey scored Fulham’s only goal of the game as they held United to a 1-1 draw before going on to secure the win via a penalty shootout.

Following the win, the Nigeria international received racial abuse from some supporters, likely affiliated with the vanquished Manchester United on social media.

A statement from Fulham read: “We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour, which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.

“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.”
