“11 world-class players don’t make a team” — Ex-Rwanda coach knocks Nigeria after Zimbabwe draw

Former Rwanda head coach Torsten Frank Spittler has criticised Nigeria’s Super Eagles following their disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo, Footynaija.com reports.

The German football manager, who previously worked with the Rwandan national team, did not hold back in his assessment of Nigeria’s performances under Eric Chelle.

Nigeria had beaten Rwanda 2-0 in Kigali with Victor Osimhen scoring both goals, but their home draw against Zimbabwe has raised fresh concerns.

Despite having top talents like Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi, the Super Eagles failed to close out the game against Zimbabwe, conceding a late equaliser from Tawanda Chirewa in the 90th minute.

In a strong statement reported by Brila Media, Spittler said:

“I am sorry to say. Nigeria won against us not playing a good match (but it was not necessary), but this doesn’t always work! As I tried to tell you, 11 world-class players don’t make a team!”

Spittler’s comments reflect what many Nigerian fans are already worried about: the Super Eagles are relying too much on individual brilliance without clear teamwork and structure.

While the players are stars at their clubs, Chelle’s team is still struggling to find rhythm and balance.

Nigeria currently sits on seven points from six matches in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group, trailing South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin.

With matches against Lesotho and Benin coming up later in the year, the pressure is mounting on Chelle to build a real team rather than depend on big names.

The Super Eagles have the talents, but as Spittler has pointed out, that alone will not guarantee results. Nigeria’s next matches will show if Chelle has learned that lesson.
