Super Eagles forward Moses Simon suffered a fitness setback earlier today during FC Nantes’ training ahead of their crucial Ligue 1 tie against RC Lens, Footynaija.com reports.
Simon had to cut short his participation in Tuesday’s training session due to pain in his heel. While the severity of his injury remains uncertain, the club’s medical team is closely monitoring his condition.
The Nigeria international’s fitness concerns come at a very critical time for Nantes, as the struggling Ligue 1 side look to overturn a poor run of form that has seen them manage just one victory from their last seven matches in the French top-flight.
Nantes’ most recent Ligue 1 disappointment came last Saturday at the Stade Louis II against Monaco. Les Canaris crumbled after getting reduced to ten men early in the game with Monaco eventually claiming a 7-1 victory.
Despite Nantes’ many struggles this campaign, Simon has been outstanding for the Ligue 1 strugglers. In 20 Ligue 1 appearances, the Nigeria international has notched five goals and registered seven assists.
He currently tops the French league’s assists chart alongside Ryan Cherki and Joao Neves of Olympique Lyonnais and Paris Saint-Germain respectively.
If Simon’s fitness issue develops into a serious injury, it will certainly be a huge blow for Antoine Kombuoare’s side, who welcome RC Lens the Stade de la Beaujoire – Louis Fonteneau on Sunday, February 23.
With his most influential attacking player likely to miss Lens’ visit, Kombuoare may be forced to rely on the likes of Douglas Augusto, Johann Lepenant and Matthis Abline to provide a much needed cutting edge upfront.
Given Simon’s importance for the team this season, Les Canaris will be hoping their star man can shake off his fitness concerns and be ready for Sunday’s game.
