German lower-tier side Magdeburg has expressed a strong interest in Nigerian-South African defender Ime Okon, who is currently on trial at Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv, Soccernet.football reports.

Their interest in the 20-year-old blossomed after an impressive performance during a friendly match on January 10, which Magdeburg won 3-1 at the pitch of the Hotel RIU Kaya in Belek.

Despite the result, the centre-back’s composed performance in the match caught the eye of the German 2. Bundesliga club’s representatives.

Reports from journalist Mikhail Spivakovsky, via the “TaToTake” YouTube channel, indicate that Magdeburg were so impressed with Okon that they were prepared to offer him a contract without requiring an additional trial period.

Okon, who also featured in Dynamo Kyiv’s 2-2 draw against Kosovo’s Llapi on Thursday, has been working hard to secure his first move to Europe.

The SuperSport United defender’s trial at Dynamo Kyiv represents a crucial moment in his promising career. Kyiv, who currently lead the Ukrainian Premier League, are reportedly evaluating whether to make the youngster an immediate signing.

Okon’s rise has been remarkable. Under the guidance of SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt, he established himself as a first-team regular during the 2023/24 season, making 33 appearances. His consistency earned him a call-up to South Africa’s national team, although he is yet to make his international debut under coach Hugo Broos.

Internationally, Okon’s dual eligibility adds intrigue to his story. Born to a Nigerian father and a South African mother, he can represent either country.

While his association with Bafana Bafana is established, a move to Europe and Nigeria’s ongoing defensive rebuild may tempt him to align with the Super Eagles. With Nigeria seeking younger replacements for seasoned players like Kenneth Omeruo and Leon Balogun, Okon could become a key figure in their future plans.
