WATCH: Real Madrid star Rodrygo seals narrow Brazil win over Ecuador in 2026 World Cup qualifier

Brazil managed to edge past Ecuador 1-0 in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday, thanks to a deflected goal from Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, Soccernet.football reports.

The win, played out in Curitiba, helped lift Brazil to fourth place in the South American qualifying standings with 10 points from seven matches, giving their lacklustre campaign a much-needed boost.

However, they remain eight points behind leaders Argentina.

Rodrygo’s decisive moment came in the 30th minute when he found space on the edge of the area and unleashed a shot from 25 yards. His effort took a crucial deflection off Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho before beating the goalkeeper and hitting the post on its way in.

Despite Brazil’s dominance in possession, clear-cut chances were few and far between.

They managed just three shots on target, struggling to break down a well-organised Ecuador defence.

This lack of fluency has been a worrying trend for Brazil, who have not impressed in recent tournaments.

Following their quarter-final exit in the 2022 World Cup and a similarly disappointing performance at this year’s Copa America, the Seleção continues to seek consistency.

With the 2026 World Cup expanding to 48 teams, Brazil are still fighting to secure a top-six finish, which guarantees qualification. They will be hoping for more decisive performances in the remaining qualifiers to avoid slipping into a play-off situation.

Rodrygo’s winner provided temporary relief, but there are still questions about Brazil’s creativity and ability to convert possession into goals as they aim for the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
