Manchester United “made a mistake” offloading Scott McTominay to Napoli, says Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic has voiced strong criticism against Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay, labeling it as a “mistake.”

Matic, a former United midfielder now playing for Lyon in Ligue 1, expressed his dismay following McTominay’s recent move to Napoli.

The 27-year-old Scottish international’s departure from Old Trafford was finalised after United accepted a £25.6 million offer.

United’s decision to offload McTominay, an academy graduate, was driven by financial considerations. His sale offered ‘pure profit’ for the club, which has been under intense financial scrutiny due to the Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR).

Matic, however, believes that the loss of McTominay could have lasting repercussions for the club.

Matic took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts: “My opinion is that #ManUtd made a mistake by selling Scott McTominay, today it is difficult to replace a player like him. Conte is a smart man.”

McTominay’s transfer was crucial in United’s ability to secure Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

The deal for Ugarte was only confirmed after McTominay’s departure, suggesting that the two transactions were interconnected.
