Denmark and Slovenia played out a thrilling 1-1 draw that offered plenty of drama and memorable moments on matchday three of Euro 2024, Soccernet.football reports.

From the emotional return of a beloved star to unexpected twists and fierce on-field battles, this match had it all.

Here are five key takeaways from this captivating contest.

1. Eriksen’s Triumphant Return

Exactly 1,100 days after his near-fatal cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen marked his return to the tournament with a stunning goal.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who collapsed on the pitch during Denmark’s match against Finland in 2021, showed his enduring class by chesting down a clever back-heel from Jonas Wind and smashing it home.

This emotional moment resonated deeply with fans and teammates alike, highlighting Eriksen’s incredible journey back to top-level football.

2. A Tale of Two Tour Champions

The match featured an unusual prelude, with cycling champions Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard being mentioned.

Pogacar, a Slovenian hero, wished his country luck via the big screen, only to be met with boos from Danish fans who cheered for their own champion, Vingegaard.

This light-hearted rivalry added a unique flavour to the pre-match atmosphere, showcasing the strong sporting pride on both sides.

3. Denmark’s Dominance but Missed Opportunities

Denmark controlled much of the match with intricate passing and dominant possession. Despite their efforts, they struggled to break down Slovenia’s resolute defence.

Jan Oblak’s crucial save from Rasmus Højlund epitomised Denmark’s frustrations. Coach Kasper Hjulmand’s post-match comments underscored the anxiety that grows when a team can’t find the crucial second goal to seal the win.

4. Slovenia’s Resilient Fightback

Slovenia, seemingly out of the match for the first 65 minutes, suddenly sprung to life with a series of counterattacks that put Denmark on the back foot.

Key moments included Adam Gnezda Cerin’s missed header and Benjamin Sesko hitting the post.

The equaliser came when Jasmin Kurtic’s corner found Jure Balkovec, whose shot deflected in off Morten Hjulmand. Slovenia’s late surge showcased their ability to seize opportunities and turn the tide in critical moments.

5. Qualification Hopes Alive for Both Teams

The 1-1 draw leaves both Denmark and Slovenia well-positioned to advance from their group.

While Eriksen’s fairytale return was slightly marred by the late equaliser, the match demonstrated Denmark’s potential and Slovenia’s resilience.

With both teams showing their strengths and areas for improvement, the road to qualification remains open and exciting.
