Jurgen Klopp: I would vote to scrap VAR

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes the Premier League cannot continue with the current version of VAR, Soccernet.football reports.

The role of VAR is scheduled to be discussed at the annual shareholders’ meeting on June 6 after Wolverhampton Wanderers who have been on the receiving end of several contentious decisions, filed a motion to abolish VAR from the Premier League.

Liverpool experienced arguably the most high-profile VAR error this season when Darren England mistakenly upheld an incorrect offside call on a Luis Diaz goal against Tottenham.

Liverpool will play Wolves in their final game under Klopp on Sunday, and the Reds’ manager agrees that Wolves are justified in saying VAR is not functioning properly in its current form as reported by The Athletic.

“I don’t think they’re voting against VAR, I think they’ll vote about how it gets used, because that’s definitely not right. I understand that,” Klopp said.

“In the way they do it, I would vote against it, because these people are not able to use it properly.

“I do not think VAR is the problem but the way we use it is the problem. You cannot change the people, it’s clear. You need them. So yeah, I would vote for scrapping VAR.”

Klopp also had this to say about his final game in charge of the Reds “I have no clue how the team meeting will be.”

“The TV documentary guys asked me, can they film the last team meeting which nobody has ever had and I said no because I have no idea how that will be.

“Maybe Virgil (van Dijk) will do it. Somebody has to do it who will be really on fire. Can I be on fire? Probably yes I think so, but I don’t know how I will be in the moment. It will be really strange.

“It is a challenge for different reasons and I hope we can all put on a really good performance. It is much easier to celebrate afterwards if you saw a good game before.”
