Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle was at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to watch Rivers United claim a 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in a tightly contested NPFL clash, Footynaija.com reports.
Rivers United, led by former Super Eagles coach Finidi George, struggled to break down a resilient Tornadoes defence for much of the match.
The breakthrough came in the 83rd minute, when Samson Obi found the net, securing all three points for the hosts. The visitors pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but could not break through Rivers United’s backline.

Apart from extending the club’s unbeaten run, the victory also strengthens Rivers Unitedʼs grip on second place in the NPFL standings with 46 points from 28 matches, keeping them in the race for continental qualification, and ultimately the NPFL title.
Niger Tornadoes, now 11th with 37 points, will need a strong finish to push into the top half of the table.
Finidi has been a fantastic addition to the Rivers United coaching bench even if his tenure with the Super Eagles was shortlived and uneventful.
The former Ajax winger guided Nigeria to a draw against South Africa and a 3-0 loss to Benin Republic last June before he resigned from the role, citing a lack of support from the NFF.
Augustine Eguavoen took over the Super Eagles on an interim basis before Chelle was appointed the substantive head coach in January.
In Port Harcourt, Chelle was on the lookout for homegrown talent as he scouted the NPFL players in action, ahead of Nigeriaʼs 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles coach is keen on identifying homegrown stars who could make an impact on the international stage.
