Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has urged young players of Nigerian descent, such as Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, to embrace their heritage by representing Nigeria, Footynaija.com reports.

The 24-year-old, who was born in Italy and raised in England, opted for Nigeria despite being eligible for the Three Lions and now hopes more talents will follow the same path.

Bassey has been in strong form for Fulham, recently scoring at Old Trafford in an FA Cup clash against Manchester United. The centre-back fired his side into the lead in a match that eventually ended in a 1-1 draw before being decided on penalties, which Fulham eventually won.

Speaking about the increasing number of dual-nationality players committing to the Super Eagles, Bassey highlighted the deep-rooted connection many have with their Nigerian heritage. “I think it’s good. With us going back to our family roots, I think a lot more players have done it as well. I feel like because most of us were first-generation, we really feel connected to our Nigerian roots,” he said, as quoted by Pulse Sports Nigeria.

The Fulham defender also pointed to the influence of Nigerian football greats like Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and John Obi Mikel in shaping the ambitions of younger players. He recalled watching Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup, particularly their game against Argentina, as a moment that strengthened his desire to represent the country.

“When Nigeria played Argentina, they lost 2-1 but it was a good game. Messi, of course – Messi is Messi, innit – he scored that outrageous goal. I think it was knee, left foot, then right foot. It was top. But that was more of a motivation to me to want to play for Nigeria and also play on the big stage,” he told Skysports.

Bassey now hopes Arsenal’s Nwaneri, who has already represented England at youth level, will at least consider following in his footsteps.

“It’s a nice feeling. Hopefully, we inspire more boys who are born in England to at least consider playing back home,” Bassey added.
