Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has returned to training with his club West Bromwich Albion after spending four months on the treatment table due to a hamstring injury, Soccernet.football reports.

Ajayi suffered the injury setback back in October during West Brom’s encounter with Cardiff City. The Nigeria international required surgery and has been relegated to the sidelines ever since.

The 31-year-old, who played every EFL Championship minute for West Brom before his injury, is edging closer to a complete return. He is set to feature for the club’s under-21s on Monday as confirmed by Baggies manager Tony Mowbray in an interview with Express and Star.

“I’ve just had conversations with [director of medical] Tony Strudwick about Dike. You could say the same about Semi [Ajayi] and the same for maybe Frabotta and Cole. When do they play? I’m asking.”

“I need to see all these players play. It’s okay to put them in little boxes with drills. I’d like to see them all play in an under-21s game. You can only play three overage players. I’ve had the conversation with Semi. ‘What about 45 minutes?’ I’m coming to watch. Him having to react and deal with things.”

“At all my clubs in the past – they play (for the youth team). If they are not getting games, then they play. They are here to play. So (they need to) want to play, show me, it’s an opportunity to show me why you should be in our team.”

Ajayi’s recovery comes at a crucial time for the Super Eagles ahead of their World Cup qualification double header against Rwanda and Zimbabwe on March 19 and 22 respectively. The former Cardiff City defender will be looking to make a complete comeback for West Brom and force himself into the thinking of Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle.
