Former Manchester United players Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Eric Cantona and Gary Neville have all paid tributes to legendary Red Devils and Scotland international striker Denis Law after his death at the age of 84, Soccernet.football reports.

In 2021, doctors diagnosed the 1964 Ballon d’Or winner with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. On Friday evening, United announced the demise of their former striker on behalf of his family in a statement.

“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away.

“He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently.

“We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference. Thank you.”

After the news of Law’s passing, fans placed shirts, scarves, and flowers outside Old Trafford, and United CEO Omar Barrada laid a wreath on Saturday to pay his respects.

Several tributes have also poured in, with a number of Manchester United old boys also sharing emotional farewell messages on social media.

Wayne Rooney wrote on X: “Legend. Thoughts with all Denis’ family and friends.”

Beckham posted on Instagram: “Tonight we lost a true gentleman of the game. Our heart goes out to Denis’s family.

“Our hearts are heavy tonight. A legend on the field but the perfect gentleman off.”

Eric Cantona also posted: “Rest in peace Denis. You were one of those who helped me feel at home in Manchester United. Thank you my friend!”

While Neville said: “Rest in peace Denis.

“A great footballer and a great man. It’s a privilege and an honour to have spent time in your company. The King of the Stretford End.”

Law spent eleven years with Manchester United, where he scored 237 goals in 404 appearances, making him United’s third all-time top scorer. He also earned 55 caps for Scotland and is still the joint-top scorer alongside Kenny Dalglish with 30 goals.
