As England prepare to face Greece in a critical Nations League encounter, interim head coach Lee Carsley is keen to deliver a strong performance in his final matches before Thomas Tuchel officially begins his tenure on January 1, Soccernet.football reports.

Following a disheartening 2-1 home loss to Greece last month, Carsley faces the challenge of steering England to victory in Athens to keep their promotion hopes alive and spare Tuchel the potential disruption of a playoff in his first camp.

In that ill-fated meeting at Wembley, Carsley fielded a highly attacking lineup featuring Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, and Anthony Gordon.

However, the tactical gamble backfired as Greece took advantage of England’s imbalanced setup.

Reflecting on the match, Carsley has promised a “more conventional” approach in Athens, particularly as Saka, Foden, Palmer, and Jack Grealish are all unavailable due to injuries.

Captain Harry Kane recently expressed frustration over these absences, suggesting that some players may not be fully committed to Carsley’s last camp.

The stakes are high as England aim to top their group and secure Nations League promotion, which could set Tuchel up for a smoother start.

However, a loss would likely mean a two-legged playoff for promotion in March, complicating England’s preparations for World Cup qualifying and undermining the FA’s decision to let Tuchel sit out this month’s fixtures.

“It was important for me to narrow it down into a project and not lose the focus,” Tuchel said at his unveiling. “I wanted to have a clean start… and start in January and start the first camp in March.”

Carsley’s experimental approach may have inadvertently relieved pressure on Tuchel.

Former England manager Gareth Southgate faced criticism for his conservative tactics at Euro 2024, yet Carsley’s all-out attack against Greece demonstrated the risks of accommodating too many creative players—a lesson Tuchel is unlikely to overlook.

For now, the task is immediate.

England will need a far more cohesive performance to avoid a repeat of their Wembley disappointment, where only John Stones’ last-minute goal-line clearance and several disallowed Greek goals kept the scoreline respectable. England’s hopes for a successful transition rest on a disciplined display in Athens.
