Werder Bremen right-back Mitchell Weiser has officially switched his international allegiance from Germany to Algeria, Soccernet.football reports.

After years of representing Germany at youth levels, Weiser will now make his debut for the Algerian national team in November.

Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg (via BFW) confirmed the move, sharing that former Bayern Munich star Weiser received an official invitation from the Algerian Football Federation.

“The invitation has reached us, and he will travel to Algeria during the next international break to play for the national team,” Werder Bremen manager Peter Niemeyer told Sky 90.

FIFA has also confirmed that Weiser’s transition from the German Football Association (DFB) to the Algerian Federation is complete, making him immediately eligible to play for Algeria.

Weiser’s career with Germany’s youth teams began in 2010 with a U-16 debut in a 6-0 win over Cyprus, and he scored his first goal for the U-17 side later that year.

His first major tournament came in the 2011 UEFA European U-17 Championship in Serbia, where Germany reached the final. Weiser continued to impress in the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico, where he scored three goals and helped Germany secure third place.

The highlight of Weiser’s youth career came in 2017 when he scored the decisive header for Germany’s U-21 team in their 1-0 victory over Spain in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship Final, securing the title for Germany.

Now 30, Weiser is eligible for Algeria through his mother’s heritage. He is expected to play a key role for Algeria when they face Equatorial Guinea and Liberia during the upcoming international break.
