Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first Premier League goal for Coventry City on Saturday as Frank Lampard’s side beat Sunderland 3-1, Footynaija reports.
The Super Eagles striker scored Coventry’s second goal in the 37th minute at the Coventry Building Society Arena after Sunderland gave away possession.
Chris Rigg’s pass put Luke O’Nien under pressure, and Awoniyi took advantage. The Nigerian forward used his strength to get past two challenges before shooting past goalkeeper Robin Roefs. His effort took a slight deflection off Omar Alderete before going into the net.
Tatsuhiro Sakamoto had put Coventry ahead in the 17th minute, while Jack Rudoni made it 3-0 seven minutes after the break.
Enzo Le Fée pulled one back for Sunderland from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, but Coventry held on to secure all three points. Alderete was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card.
The win lifted Coventry to 15th place with nine points from nine matches. Sunderland dropped to the bottom of the table with five points.
Awoniyi joined Coventry from Nottingham Forest in August in a reported £9 million transfer after four seasons at the City Ground. He scored 23 goals in 103 appearances for Forest but struggled for regular playing time last season after suffering an abdominal injury.
Forest, meanwhile, lost 2-0 to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Nikola Milenković scored an own goal in the 30th minute before Igor Thiago added a second in the 76th minute. Nigeria international Ola Aina featured for the first 45 minutes before he was replaced just before the start of the second half.
The defeat leaves Forest 19th in the Premier League table with six points from nine games, just one place above Sunderland.
