Gift Monday’s record-breaking goalscoring in the United States has earned her attention, but Boston Legacy FC want the Super Falcons striker to offer more than goals, with the club placing particular value on her pressing, chance creation and willingness to work for the team, Footynaija.com reports.
The 24-year-old made an immediate impression after joining Washington Spirit from Spain’s UD Tenerife in March 2025. She scored 11 goals across all competitions in her first season, including a hat-trick against Houston Dash that took just 35 minutes and 52 seconds, setting the record for the fastest hat-trick from kickoff in National Women’s Soccer League history.
Her experience in Spain, where she recorded 26 goal contributions in more than 65 appearances, also gave her a broader understanding of playing in different attacking systems.
Boston, meanwhile, were trying to build an identity in their inaugural NWSL season. They needed attacking options who could do more than wait for chances inside the box, particularly against teams that made space difficult to find.
What Boston expect from Monday
In its announcement, Boston Legacy general manager Domè Guasch explained the qualities that made the Nigerian attractive to the club.
“Gift brings a unique set of qualities as a forward that will add another dimension to our attack,” Guasch said.
“She will contribute to our high press, create opportunities and be dangerous in the final third. She’s also a team player, and that matters to us as much as her quality on the pitch.”
The comments point to a forward expected to contribute at different stages of an attack. Pressing from the front can help win possession higher up the pitch, while creating opportunities requires movement and awareness beyond simply finishing a teammate’s pass.
Monday’s record at Washington gives Boston evidence of her goalscoring ability. She made 48 regular-season appearances for the Spirit, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists, according to the club’s announcement of her move.
Her next task is to show that those numbers can translate into a different team’s approach. Boston have outlined what they want from her, and the challenge is to turn those expectations into a productive partnership with her new teammates.
