Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has picked Super Eagles teammates Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo in his ultimate six-a-side team, Footynaija reports.
In picking Aribo, the Nigeria international overlooked former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla in his selection.
Iwobi, who is embracing his new role with Baller League UK, was asked to name his ideal team for the Heineken Ultimate Six-a-Side challenge.
The former Arsenal star opted for familiar faces, selecting players he knows well from his football journey, including former England youth international Chuba Akpom, who switched his international allegiance to Nigeria.
Iwobi named Derby County goalkeeper Josh Vickers as his first choice, explaining that their friendship dates back to their younger days.
“I’m selfish. I like to choose my friends, so I’m going to say Josh Vickers, who plays for Derby County. I grew up playing with him in Hale End. He’s very agile and very good with his feet,” Iwobi said.
The Fulham star then chose Bassey as his defender, describing the powerful centre-back as the kind of player he wanted at the back.
“I think I need an animal at the back, so I’ll choose Calvin Bassey,” he added.
Iwobi explains Aribo selection
Iwobi selected Glen Kamara for his midfield before opting for Aribo, favouring his familiarity with the former Rangers players.
Iwobi praised Kamara’s technical ability and revealed that the midfielder possessed a powerful shot that he rarely used.
“My boy Glen Kamara. He’s at QPR, very technical and keeps it simple. But he has a shot on him that nobody knows about because he doesn’t like to use it. That’s a shot, so I think it’ll be handy here,” he said.
When asked about his second midfield choice, Iwobi settled on Aribo, despite the interviewer’s suggestion that Cazorla was a strong contender.
“I might keep it at Rangers. I might go with Joe Aribo,” he said.
Asked about Cazorla, Iwobi explained that his selections were driven by chemistry and familiarity with his teammates.
“Santi is, but it’s because of the chemistry. Rangers players are my friends. I’ve played six-a-side with them, so I know what they’re like,” he explained.
Iwobi also picked himself for the attacking position before naming Akpom, whom he has known since childhood.
“I think I’ll just about make the team, simply because it’s my team. Then I’ll choose Chuba Akpom, because I’ve played with him since I was six years old,” he said.
Iwobi and Bassey were on the losing side as Ipswich Town and Akpom claimed a 2-1 win over Fulham at the weekend.
