Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey are still waiting for their first Premier League win of the season with Fulham after another late collapse left Álvaro Arbeloa searching for answers, Footynaija.com reports.
Fulham have now gone six league matches without a win, leaving them at the bottom of the table with only two points. The defeat to Ipswich Town followed a similar disappointment against Manchester United in September, when Fulham conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
The latest result will concern Arbeloa because his team had appeared close to securing their first league victory under the former Real Madrid defender. Instead, they left Portman Road empty-handed after conceding twice in the closing stages.
Arbeloa demands improvement after Ipswich defeat
Fulham took the lead through Ryan Sessegnon in the 55th minute on Saturday, but Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 88th minute before Dara O’Shea headed home the winner in stoppage time.
Iwobi started the match and was substituted in the 87th minute, just before Ipswich drew level. Bassey, who captained Fulham, played the full 90 minutes.
Speaking after the defeat, the Fulham boss said his players should have continued with the approach that had served them well before Sessegnon’s goal.
“We became very direct after taking the lead, but you need to try to keep doing the same things,” Arbeloa said, according to Fulham’s official post-match reaction.
The Spaniard also questioned his side’s use of the ball and warned that they must change how they approach games after going ahead.
“When you give the ball away so easily, the opposition will attack you, and we must change our mentality when we score,” he said.
Arbeloa added that he was pleased with many aspects of his team’s play, but stressed that Fulham’s position in the table was the priority.
“The most important thing is Fulham’s position, and we need points,” he said.
Fulham return home next weekend to face Hull City, with Arbeloa calling it a “massive game” as his side seek their first league win of the campaign.
