Eric Chelle watched Nigeria stumble into half-time against Madagascar with the Super Eagles trailing 1-0, their attack struggling to turn possession into danger, Footynaija reports.
The AFCON 2027 qualifier had begun to carry the uncomfortable feel of another night when Nigeria’s talent threatened to be swallowed by an opponent defending deep and protecting its advantage.
Then Chelle went to his bench. Moses Usor and Moses Simon arrived in the 61st minute, replacing Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams, and the complexion of the contest changed almost instantly.

Usor needed only four minutes to announce himself on the international stage, producing a dazzling run and finish that completed Nigeria’s comeback and sent the crowd in Uyo into delirium.
The substitutions did more than provide fresh legs. They injected pace, experience and attacking variety into a side that had spent much of the evening searching for a way through Madagascar’s defensive resistance. Taiwo Awoniyi, Tolu Arokodare and Bright Osayi-Samuel followed, giving Chelle further options to reshape the game as Nigeria protected its lead. Three decisions, in particular, revealed why the Super Eagles boss got his second-half changes right.
1. Chelle unleashed Usor at exactly the right moment
Chelle sent Moses Usor on for Samuel Chukwueze in the 61st minute, alongside the introduction of veteran winger Moses Simon for Akor Adams. Four minutes later, Usor repaid that faith with a stunning debut goal.
The LASK winger collected the ball on the counter, raced beyond defenders and finished with his left foot to put Nigeria ahead in the 65th minute.
The brave substitution therefore produced an almost immediate return, transforming Usor from international debutant into match-winner.
2. Simon added experience when Nigeria needed control
Simon entered with Nigeria level at 1-1 and brought a decade of international experience into a match that had briefly threatened to become uncomfortable.
The Paris FC winger was making his 100th Super Eagles appearance, becoming only the fifth Nigerian to reach the landmark. His introduction also gave Chelle another experienced outlet as Madagascar tried to protect its defensive shape.
The decision was particularly significant because Nigeria’s attack had already lost Akor Adams, while Victor Osimhen was unavailable through injury.
3. Chelle refreshed the attack without sacrificing the result
After Usor had delivered the lead, Chelle continued reshaping the forward line rather than allowing Nigeria to become passive.
Taiwo Awoniyi replaced Ilenikhena in the 69th minute, while Tolu Arokodare came on for Ademola Lookman a minute later. Arokodare nearly added a third when his 72nd-minute strike crashed against the upright.
Bright Osayi-Samuel then replaced Ola Aina in the 87th minute, giving Nigeria fresh legs at the back during the closing stages.
Chelle’s substitutions ultimately supplied goals, experience, attacking depth and late defensive freshness as Nigeria opened their 2027 AFCON Group L campaign with three points in Uyo.
