Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase after producing a strong finish to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 in extra time, Footynaija reports.
The French side had looked set for a tense battle after Frankfurt cancelled out their first-half lead. But PSG took control in extra time, with Nigeria internationals Rasheedat Ajibade and Jennifer Echegini playing important roles.
Merveille Kanjinga gave PSG the lead in the 36th minute. Frankfurt goalkeeper Lina Altenburg had earlier denied Echegini, who went close to scoring after 15 minutes.
Frankfurt refused to give up and levelled through Rebecka Blomqvist in the 76th minute. The goal forced the tie into extra time and gave the German side hope of causing an upset.
PSG quickly regained control. Kanjinga scored again in the 95th minute after meeting a dangerous free-kick from Echegini. The Nigerian midfielder’s delivery gave her team-mate the chance to finish from close range.
Sakina Karchaoui then struck twice to put PSG firmly in charge. Her first goal came in the 105th minute after she raced behind the Frankfurt defence before calmly finding the net.
Nine minutes later, Karchaoui scored from the penalty spot after Ajibade won the spot-kick for PSG.
Ajibade then added the final goal in the 120th minute to complete a memorable night for the Super Falcons captain.
The result means PSG move into the main league phase of Europe’s top women’s club competition, while Frankfurt’s hopes of progressing end after a dramatic extra-time collapse.
