NFF President Ibrahim Gusau is expected to address the media at a world press conference on Thursday as questions grow over the future of the federation’s leadership, Footynaija reports.

The briefing is scheduled for 12:00 at the NFF headquarters, Sunday Dankaro Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Gusau is expected to clarify several issues that have dominated Nigerian football in recent weeks, including reports about the 2026 NFF elections, the future of the current Executive Committee and calls for the leadership to resign.

The timing of the briefing is significant because reports have claimed that Gusau and other members of the Executive Committee have resigned. Former Super Eagles media officer Obong Colin reported that the president and other board members stepped down on Thursday, 27 August.

However, the NFF had not issued an official statement confirming the reported resignations at the time of writing. The press conference could therefore provide the first direct explanation from Gusau about his position.

Earlier reports said eight of the 13 Executive Committee members had already left their positions. NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi has also been linked with the reported leadership changes.

The crisis follows a difficult period for Nigerian football. The Super Falcons missed the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in the qualification play-off. Their hopes had suffered an earlier blow when they lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

Nigeria had appeared at every Women’s World Cup since the first tournament in 1991.

The Super Eagles also failed to reach the 2026 men’s World Cup after losing to DR Congo on penalties, while the Golden Eaglets missed the 2026 U-17 World Cup.

Financial questions have added to the pressure. The EFCC and ICPC are investigating the use of a ₦12bn Federal Government intervention fund released in 2024 for unpaid wages, bonuses and allowances. The NFF has said the relevant records are with the anti-graft agencies.

The National Sports Commission also recently said the Federal Government had not ordered the NFF leadership to resign.

Gusau’s press conference could now set the tone for the next stage of the crisis, including whether the planned 27 September elective congress in Lafia, Nasarawa State, will go ahead as scheduled.
