“It looks like I was right” – Ragnick says about previous assessment as Man United struggles continue

Ralf Rangnick maintains that his candid evaluation of Manchester United needing an ‘open heart operation’ has been proven accurate, Soccernet.football reports.

The German spent seven months at Old Trafford after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in November 2021, before Erik ten Hag was eventually named as his successor.

Rangnick, now in charge of the Austrian national team, was openly critical of Manchester United during his stint as interim manager. At the time, he candidly told reporters that the club required an ‘open heart operation’.

Current United boss backed up this blunt assessment later on, agreeing that there was a need for change if the club was to make progress.

Ragnick has now come out to say that the last couple of years have only served to prove him right; “I probably made that statement when the season was almost over about two years ago,” he told TV2.

“It is probably only two or three weeks since Erik ten Hag was asked the same thing. Then he said that I was right in my analysis. I don’t know how many players they have signed since, but it looks like I was right.

“Before I left for Manchester, I had a long and thorough talk with Solskjaer, two hours in fact. But there is no point in going into detail, it was a long time ago and is not exciting. But I am coach for Austria now and am not close enough to United to assess the status there.”

After suffering back to back defeats just before the international break, the Red Devils will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they visit St. Mary’s to take on Southampton on matchday 4 of the Premier League.
